Sense of smell

Trying on Perfume
A leading centre for the sense of smell

London Nose & Sinus Clinic is a centre of excellence for the assessment and treatment of smell disorders.

Our clinicians have a background of specialist interest in smell disorders including anosmia, hyposmia and parosmia.  There are many causes of smell loss and other smell disorders, including viral infections, chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps, and expert assessment is beneficial.

If you have persistent loss of smell, including following COVID-19 infection, you may wish to have a specialised assessment of your sense of smell, and learn about treatments and therapeutic approaches that be used to optimise your recovery.

We recognise how important it is for you to choose the right specialist for your medical care.

If you have any questions about whether we are suitable for your care, please contact us.

Smell (olfactory) testing at LNSC

London Nose & Sinus Clinic offers a range of tests that can help us to investigate and understand smell disorders.

The first step in making progress is ensuring you have the correct diagnosis.  Nasal endoscopy allows your Consultant to examine the inside of the nasal cavity to check for inflammation, nasal polyps, narrowing of the olfactory regions, or any other abnormality that could be responsible for smell loss.  In many cases the appearances are reassuringly normal.

In some cases it can be helpful to quantify your ability to detect and discriminate (tell the difference between) different odours.  We offer detailed smell assessments based on "Sniffin' Sticks" and the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT), both of which are evidence-based olfactory tests in worldwide use.
